With so many year-round tourist attractions, the economy here is strong, boasting an unemployment rate of just 1.9%. This Outer Banks town a few miles east across the water from Roanoke Island is a popular summer tourist destination. More than 52% of the homes here sit vacant, but of those vacant homes, a good portion is second homes that are only occupied seasonally. According to the Outer Banks Association of Realtors, housing inventory in the area dropped dramatically in 2020, and as a result of such demand, median housing prices in Kill Devil Hills went from $285,000 to $315,000.
